What is a Brow Lift?

Forehead and brow are closely connected to periorbital region both functionally and aesthetically. This intimate relationship is frequently unrecognized and could lead to suboptimal surgical outcome.  For example sagging brows could contribute to hooding of the upper eyelids which in unexperienced eyes might be merely an excess eyelid skin issue. Presence of deep transverse lines in the forehead could be due to aging or compensation for droopy eyelid or brow.

While eyebrows’ position is a strong indicator or person’s emotional state such as sadness, anger, fatigue, surprise, its ideal aesthetic location is variable depending on patient’s age, race and overall frame of facial anatomy. Just as described in facial rejuvenation section, aging of periorbital region also occurs as a result of three phenomenon: Skin damage, skin laxity and fat deflation.

Surgery to lift the brow (also known as a brow lift or forehead lift) is a popular cosmetic procedure that helps create a lifted brow position, offering a refreshed look to the upper portion of the face. A sagging brow can many times cause an angry or tired appearance, however, a brow lift can give you a rejuvenated and happier appearance. By removing excess skin from the forehead, plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Hakimi can raise the eyebrows on patients to provide a younger look. BOTOX is often performed after the brow lift surgery to make the results last longer.

Can I Get a Brow Lift?

As you grow older, your skin elasticity diminishes and causes several portions of your face to droop. This is particularly true in the upper face and can impact both men and women. When looking in a mirror, do you seem angry or tired? Do you notice deep wrinkles between your eyebrows? Are you bothered by a sagging brow? If so, brow lift surgery  may be the right aesthetic treatment to help you get the look you've been desiring.

How is a Brow Lift Performed?

Before surgery, we will give you anesthesia for added comfort during your procedure. This may be done through general anesthesia or local while awake depending on your customized treatment plan. A brow lift typically takes between 1 – 2 hours. The incision technique used during a brow lift will be determined on the severity of skin sag, if your forehead is affected, and the position of your hairline. Some of the many approaches to consider:

  • Traditional Incision: Also known as the open browplasty incision, this incision is placed behind the hairline at the top of the head, not only hiding scars but providing a certain amount of controlled lifting throughout the procedure. The traditional incision works well for those with both a sagging brow and frown lines. This is the better incision if you are at risk for having a receding hairline.
  • Hairline Incision: The trichophytic (hairline) incision is placed right against the hairline across your forehead, allowing significant lifting of the brow if you need your entire forehead lifted. This same surgery can be a forehead reduction surgery as it can bring forward the hairline making the forehead smaller.
  • Lateral Brow Lift: Also called a temporal brow lift, the lateral brow lift starts with an incision within the hairline slightly above the temples. This is the most commonly performed brow lift as it permits the outer sections of the brow to be raised and is best for sagging that is present in the outer brow. A temporal brow lift also helps to treat Crow’s feet.

Recovery following brow lift surgery can vary, depending on the type of incision you receive. In general, you will likely feel some swelling and bruising in the upper portion of your face around your eyebrows and possibly near your eyes. Cold compresses may help to reduce the swelling.  The average recovery period from this procedure is around 7 days.  You should see results right away with a refreshed appearance that looks softer and more alert, as well as a visible improvement in fine lines and sagging in the upper half of your face.
