For years, nonsurgical hair restoration has been dominated by a handful of very familiar names, particularly minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride, the generic of Propecia. 

While these remain two of the most established, FDA-approved treatments for hair loss, today’s patients have more options, including peptide therapies designed to support the microenvironment of the scalp and some of the biological processes involved in hair growth.

But what are peptides, really? And do they actually do anything for your hair?

Here’s an honest look at the science, the limitations, and what we think makes peptides worth considering at Hakimi Plastic Surgery.

Peptides 101: What They Are and How They Work

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up proteins. They act as chemical messengers that regulate important processes in the body, but how they’re arranged helps determine the message they carry, almost like written language. 

If amino acids are individual letters, peptides are small words the body can read and respond to. Longer chains form proteins, or “sentences,” capable of more complex tasks. 

You might already be familiar with peptides from the skincare world: they are a popular ingredient in many products and serums, including the Skinbetter® line we carry. The hair loss conversation is newer, but researchers are exploring how certain peptides may support the environment around the hair follicle and contribute to healthier, fuller-looking hair.

How Do Peptides Support Hair Growth?

When people talk about peptides for hair growth, they’re usually referring to copper peptides, and two in particular: GHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-1) and AHK-Cu (copper tripeptide-3).

AHK-Cu is a synthetic peptide used primarily in hair and scalp treatments, while GHK-Cu is something your body already produces naturally, acting as a carrier peptide for copper ions. Outside of its role as a copper delivery service, GHK-Cu is also important for tissue repair and regeneration, processes that are negatively impacted as GHK-Cu levels fall with age. 

Research by Pickart and Margolina, published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, found that GHK-Cu is highest in young, healthy individuals, but plasma levels drop 60% between the ages of 20 (200 ng/mL) and 60 (80 ng/mL). That decrease may be part of why hair follicles deteriorate, sparking interest in what happens when those levels are replenished.

None of this means copper peptides are a cure. But the science behind them is grounded in real biology, which makes them considerably more interesting than many of the ingredients competing for space on a drugstore shelf.

How Are Copper Peptides Used at Hakimi Plastic Surgery?

Most people first encounter copper peptides as a serum they apply at home or mix into their shampoo. That’s fine as a starting point, but your scalp is very good at keeping things out. Intact skin acts as a barrier, which means even a well-formulated topical may never deliver enough of its active ingredient to reach the hair follicles.

At Hakimi Plastic Surgery, we get around the barrier problem by pairing copper peptides with professional microneedling, a quick in-office procedure that uses dozens of tiny needles to puncture the skin and create micro-channels throughout the scalp, enhancing product absorption. The microneedling itself also triggers the scalp’s own healing response, releasing natural growth factors that support a healthier follicle environment. 

The same micro-channels that help copper peptides penetrate the scalp can also improve the absorption of other topical products, including minoxidil. In a frequently cited 2013 study by Dhurat et al., men treated with microneedling and minoxidil showed significantly greater improvement than those treated with minoxidil alone.

What to Expect if You Try Peptide-Based Hair Restoration

No treatment plan is one-size-fits-all. The exact strategy we use varies depending on the cause of your hair loss and how far it has progressed. 

At Hakimi Plastic Surgery, most patients start with a series of four to six in-office treatments (microneedling + peptide application), spaced about one month apart, followed by a maintenance phase and consistent at-home care. Progress is evaluated over the following months, and your plan can be adjusted based on your response to treatment. 

Hair growth takes time, and peptide-based treatments are no exception. Meaningful changes develop gradually, so don’t get discouraged that new growth doesn’t happen overnight. It generally takes three to six months before early results can be evaluated, and at first, those might just be subtle improvements in how your hair looks and feels. 

Can Peptides Stop Hair Loss?

Copper peptides can help, but results vary depending on a number of factors, including the underlying cause of your hair loss.

If your thinning hair is due to inflammation, stress or weak follicles, copper peptides may improve your scalp and hair health to support new growth. If your hair loss is genetic, peptides alone won’t be enough. Consider combining them with FDA-approved treatments like finasteride or minoxidil for a more comprehensive (and complementary) approach to hair loss. 

Peptides also can’t regrow hair in bald areas where the follicles are no longer viable — no cream, vitamin, medication or topical treatment can.  

Where Do Peptides Fit Into Your Current Hair Routine?

Copper peptide treatments can play different roles depending on what you are already doing, how much thinning you’ve noticed and what you want to add to your routine.

You Haven’t Tried Anything Yet

If you’re just noticing the early signs of thinning, copper peptides may offer a reasonable starting point for supporting the scalp and encouraging healthier growth. But for those with a confirmed diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia (male/female pattern baldness), established medical therapies might make more sense as a first step. 

You’re Already Using Minoxidil

You don’t have to choose between minoxidil and peptides. If minoxidil is already part of your routine, copper peptides and microneedling may be considered as a complementary treatment to enhance your overall results. This combination allows you to build on your existing routine while addressing hair growth through a different pathway.

You’re Doing What You Can at Home

There comes a point where adding another serum to the bathroom shelf won’t make a meaningful difference. If you are already consistent with at-home care but want to do more, copper peptides offer a more targeted, in-office approach to hair restoration.

You Want to Avoid Medication

Some patients are specifically looking for a non-medical solution to hair restoration. Copper peptides with microneedling may be worth considering if you want to support fuller, healthier-looking hair without adding a prescription medication to your routine. FAQs About Copper Peptides

Are copper peptides FDA-approved for hair loss?

No. While early research is promising, copper peptides are not FDA-approved for treating hair loss. GHK-Cu is a naturally occurring peptide involved in several cellular processes, while AHK-Cu is a closely related synthetic peptide that has been studied for its effect on hair follicle cells. Both may be used in formulations intended to support fuller, healthier-looking hair. 

Do copper peptides have a meaningful effect on DHT?

Some brands claim that copper ions delivered by GHK-Cu inhibit 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This idea traces back in part to a 1995 study (Sugimoto et al.), which found that copper did inhibit 5-alpha-reductase in vitro. However, the study tested copper, not copper peptides, and it did not demonstrate the effect outside of a laboratory setting.  

Most experts would not consider copper peptides a reliable DHT blocker compared to medications like finasteride. Their role is better viewed as complementary, with an emphasis on supporting scalp and follicle health.

Are there any side effects of copper peptide hair treatments?

Copper peptides are generally well-tolerated when used topically, although research on their use for hair and scalp care is still developing. Some people may experience temporary sensitivity or irritation when introducing a new topical product. 

When copper peptides are paired with microneedling, most short-term side effects come from the microneedling itself. Mild redness, tenderness, tightness, itching, or pinpoint bleeding can occur after treatment and typically improve as the scalp heals.
